23.37. raid - RAID

The following documentation is for RAID (raid) content package at version v4.6.0-beta01.47+gfb4d9d119b24c3ffbb0ec412c8495528d8f92159.

The raid plugin provides two pieces to the system.

  • A content pack with stages, tasks, and parameters
  • A go-binary that can run in sledgehammer to take actions

These two pieces together work to configure and manage the hardware raid subsystem of a physical machine.

23.37.1. Operational Information

The raid plugin provides a set of operational and example stages for configuring the hardware raid subsystem.

Provided Stages:

  • raid-inventory - Provides an inventory of the raid subsystem
  • raid-enable-encryption - Configures controller level encryption
  • raid-configure - Configures the volumes on the raid system
  • raid-reset - Resets the skip parameters to allow for reconfiguration
  • raid-baseline - Snapshots the current configuration into a usable raid-target-configuration parameter
  • raid-example - Historical stage that got split into raid-configure and raid-inventory

The stages make sure that the appropriate raid tools are installed.

The system uses two toggle parameters to make sure that once configured the RAID configuration is not altered. raid-skip-config and raid-skip-encryption parameters to ensure that the RAID subsystem does NOT get altered once configured. To enable reconfiguration, clear these parameters from the machine’s object or use the raid-reset stage or task in your workflow.

23.37.2. Digital Rebar RAID Configuration Tool

The Digital Rebar RAID configuration tool (also known as drp-raid) is designed to be an automated wrapper around lower-level RAID configuration tools. It is designed to work with the RAID workload in the Sledgehammer environment.

23.37.2.1. Usage

By default, drp-raid will attempt to operate on all controllers present in the system. If a specific controller is desired, the controller should be specified in the configuration structures.

drp-raid can perform a few common tasks:

23.37.2.1.1. Report Current Configuration

drp-raid with no arguments reports on the current state of all the RAID controllers it knows about, including the state of all physical drives and volumes. This report is output in the form of a JSON array of controllers.

23.37.2.1.2. Clear All Configuration

drp-raid -clear will clear all configuration on all RAID controllers attached to the system, including any foreign configuration.

The -force flag can be used to set the disks to a GOOD state once the configuration has been wiped.

23.37.2.1.3. Show Current Volume Specifications

drp-raid -volspecs shows the current list of volumes on all RAID controllers in the system in a form that can be fed into drp-raid -configure to recreate the volumes as they are.

Additionally, the -generic flag can be given to the command to create volspecs that are less disk specific in format. The normal mode generates a disk entry for each disk in the volume. The generic mode will generate counts instead of specific drives.

23.37.2.1.4. Compile Volume Specifications Into Final Format

drp-raid -compile takes a list of volume specifications on stdin, compiles them to a format suitable for the current system (including resolving what drives to use and what the approximate final size of each given volume will be), and outputs that list on stdout. It assumes that the RAID controllers are unconfigured, and it will change the current RAID configuration.

23.37.2.1.5. Configure Volumes on Raid Controllers

drp-raid -configure takes a list of volume specifications on stdin, compiles them, and then attempts to create any needed volumes on the RAID controllers. Existing volumes will not be modified or deleted.

The -force flag can be used to set the disks to a GOOD state prior to adding the drive to its volume.

23.37.2.1.6. Add Volumes to Raid Controllers

drp-raid -append attemps to add the list of volume specifications from stdin to the preexisting volumes. Unlike configure, you do not need to pass in volume specifications for existing volumes.

23.37.2.1.7. Encrypt Raid Controllers

drp-raid -encrypt attemps to configure the global encryption settings for the specified raid controller. This requires additional parameters:

  • -key - the base key for the system.
  • -password - the base password for the system.

The content tasks use parameters to fill these in automatically.

23.37.2.1.8. Supported RAID Controllers

drp-raid supports all RAID controllers supported by current MegaCLI and StorCLI tooling for Avago-based RAID controllers, along with all HP SmartArray controllers that are manageable by ssacli. Additional controllers supported by the PercCLI and MVCli tool chains. Support for other tools and RAID controller types can be added as part of a consulting or support engagement, depending in your license terms.

23.37.2.2. Volume Specifications

Volume specifications (volspecs for short) are what drp-raid uses to configure RAID volumes, no matter what RAID toolset or controller type you are using. A list of volume specifications looks like this json:

Each field in a volume specification is defined as follows:

  • Controller: an integer that specifies which discovered controller the RAID volume should be created on. drp-raid orders controllers based on PCI address. This value defaults to 0, indicating that the volume will be built on the first discovered controller.

  • RaidLevel: A string value that specifies what level of RAID to build. RaidLevel must be present in all volspecs, and it has no default. Valid RaidLevels are:

    • “jbod”: All disks in this volspec should be turned into JBOD
      volumes. If a given RAID controller does not support jbod mode, a single-disk RAID0 will be created for each disk instead.
    • “concat”: The disks should be concatenated.
    • “raid0”: Make a RAID0 with the chosen disks.
    • “raid1”: Make a RAID1 with the chosen disks.
    • “raid5”: Make a RAID5 with the chosen disks.
    • “raid6”: Make a RAID6 with the chosen disks.
    • “raid00”: Make a RAID00 with the chosen disks.
    • “raid10”: Make a RAID10 with the chosen disks.
    • “raid1e”: Make a RAID1e with the chosen disks.
    • “raid50”: make a RAID50 with the chosen disks.
    • “raid60”: make a RAID60 with the chosen disks.
    • “raidS”: Works like jbod, but makes raid0 volumes.

    Not all RAID controllers will support the above RAID levels, and with the exception of jbod if a RAID level is not supported then volume creation will fail.

  • Disks: A list of physical disk specifiers that indicate which physical disks should be used to create the volume. When creating a volume by specifying individual disks, you are responsible for making sure that the choice of disks is sane for the desired controller. If Disks is specified, then DiskCount is ignored and drp-raid will not perform more than minimal sanity checking on the disks provided. Each entry in the Disks list must contain the following fields:

    • “Enclosure”: a string that identifies which enclosure the disk is in.
    • “Slot”: a number that identifies which slot in the Enclosure the desired
      physical disk is in.
  • DiskCount: The number of disks that should be used to build the desired volume. DiskCount can be one of the following:

    • “min”, which indicates that the smallest number of disks that can
      be used for the requested RaidLevel whould be used.
    • “max”, which indicates that the largest number of disks with the
      same Type and Protocol should be used.
    • A positive integer.

    If DiskCount is unspecified and Disks is also unspecified, DiskCount will default to “min”.

  • Size: A string value that indicates what the desired total useable size of the RAID array should be. When you let drp-raid decide what physical disks to pick for volume creation, it will pick the smallest disks that can be used to satisfy the volume creation request. Size can be one of the following values:

    • “min”, which will pick the smallest disks that meet the rest of
      the constraints in the volspec.
    • “max”, which will pick the largest disks that meet the rest of the
      constraints in the volspec.
    • A string containing a human-readable size (100 MB, 1 TB, 5 PB).

    If Size is unspecified or left blank, it will default to “max”.

  • Type: A comma-seperated list of disk types that should be tried in order when creating a volume. Currently, individual items can be “disk” for rotational disks, and “ssd” for solid-state disks. If unspecified, “disk,ssd” will be used. All physical disks in a created volume will be of the same type, and it is perrmitted to have a list with one entry.

  • Protocol: A comma-seperated list of low-level protocols that should be tried in order when creating a volume. Currently, individual items can be “sata” for disks that communicate using the SATA protocol, and “sas” for disks that communicate using the SAS protocol. All physical disks in a created volume will communicate using the same protocol, and it is perrmitted to have a list with one entry.

  • StripeSize: A string containing the human-readable size of each individual stripe in the RAID array. It is generally a power of two less than or equal to 1 MB. If unspecified, it defaults to “64 KB”.

  • Name: The desired name of the volume, if the RAID controller supports naming volumes. Naming a volume is currently unsupported.

  • VolumeID: The controller-specific ID of the created volume.

  • Bootable: A boolean value indicating whether this volume should be the default one the RAID controller will use when booting the system. Defaults to false, and Bootable support is currently not implemented.

  • Encrypt: Whether the volume should be transparently encrypted by the RAID controller. This requires controller-specific setup.

  • AllowMixedSizes: Whether we will create a volume that spans physical disks of wildly mixed sizes. By default, we will fail if we pick disks underlying a volume that vary in size by more than 10%.

23.37.4. Object Specific Documentation

23.37.4.1. stages

The content package provides the following stages.

23.37.4.1.1. raid-configure

This stages installs the tools need to configuration the hardware RAID subsystem and then configures the system based upon the raid-target-configuration parameter.

23.37.4.1.2. raid-enable-encryption

This stages installs the tools need to configuration the hardware RAID subsystem and then configures the controller-level encryption based upon the current parameter settings.

23.37.4.1.3. raid-example

THIS STAGE IS DEPRECATED.

This stage has been replaced by raid-configure.

23.37.4.1.4. raid-inventory

This stage installs the tools needed to inventory the RAID subsystem and records the current state of the controllers.

23.37.4.1.5. raid-reset

This stage resets the skip configuration parameters to enable the RAID subsystem to be reconfigured.

23.37.4.2. tasks

The content package provides the following tasks.

23.37.4.2.1. raid-tools-install

The raid-tools-install task pulls the tools from DRP unless specified by the raid-archive-urls parameter.

The default tools all attempted to be installed for widest coverage.

The tools are not prebuilt into sledgehammer for licensing reaasons.

These tools can be found at and named in the files/raid directory of DRP:

23.37.4.2.2. raid-configure

The main task to configure the RAID subsystem.

If the raid-skip-config parameter is set to true, the whole task will be skipped.

If the raid-clear-config parameter is set to true, the configuration will be cleared before the configuration is applied.

The raid-target-configuration parameter is used to define the desired RAID configuration.

23.37.4.2.3. raid-configure-example

Deprecated Task to configure the RAID Subsystem.

This is replaced by raid-configure.

23.37.4.2.4. raid-enable-encryption

This task configures controller-level encryption if available.

If the raid-skip-encryption parameter is true, this task will be entirely skipped.

The system will generate a key and password if they are unset. To specify the key and password, use the raid-encryption-key and raid-encryption-password parameters.

Optionally, the raid-encryption-password-save flag can be used to save the randomly generated password if not specified. The password will be stored on the machine in raid-encryption-password.

The raid-encryption-key is the machine’s serial number if not specified.

23.37.4.2.5. raid-inventory

This task records the current RAID configuration on the machine’s object in the raid-current-config parameter.

23.37.4.2.6. raid-reset

The raid-reset tasks clears the skip configuration parameters from the machine object. These are the raid-skip-config and the raid-skip-encryption parameters.

23.37.4.2.7. raid-set-baseline

The raid-set-baseline task will use the current configuration and generate a new raid-target-config for this machine. This can be used to configure the system consistently in the future or applied to other similar systems.

The raid-baseline-generic flag determines if the generated configuration has specific disk references or generic disk counts.

23.37.4.3. params

The content package provides the following params.

23.37.4.3.1. raid-encryption-password-save

Should the random raid encryption password be saved.

23.37.4.3.2. raid-target-config

Each field in a volume specification is defined as follows:

  • Controller: an integer that specifies which discovered controller the RAID volume should be created on. drp-raid orders controllers based on PCI address. This value defaults to 0, indicating that the volume will be built on the first discovered controller.

  • RaidLevel: A string value that specifies what level of RAID to build. RaidLevel must be present in all volspecs, and it has no default. Valid RaidLevels are:

    • “jbod”: All disks in this volspec should be turned into JBOD
      volumes. If a given RAID controller does not support jbod mode, a single-disk RAID0 will be created for each disk instead.
    • “concat”: The disks should be concatenated.
    • “raid0”: Make a RAID0 with the chosen disks.
    • “raid1”: Make a RAID1 with the chosen disks.
    • “raid5”: Make a RAID5 with the chosen disks.
    • “raid6”: Make a RAID6 with the chosen disks.
    • “raid00”: Make a RAID00 with the chosen disks.
    • “raid10”: Make a RAID10 with the chosen disks.
    • “raid1e”: Make a RAID1e with the chosen disks.
    • “raid50”: make a RAID50 with the chosen disks.
    • “raid60”: make a RAID60 with the chosen disks.
    • “raidS”: Works like jbod, but makes raid0 volumes.

    Not all RAID controllers will support the above RAID levels, and with the exception of jbod if a RAID level is not supported then volume creation will fail.

  • Disks: A list of physical disk specifiers that indicate which physical disks should be used to create the volume. When creating a volume by specifying individual disks, you are responsible for making sure that the choice of disks is sane for the desired controller. If Disks is specified, then DiskCount is ignored and drp-raid will not perform more than minimal sanity checking on the disks provided. Each entry in the Disks list must contain the following fields:

    • “Enclosure”: a string that identifies which enclosure the disk is in.
    • “Slot”: a number that identifies which slot in the Enclosure the desired
      physical disk is in.
  • DiskCount: The number of disks that should be used to build the desired volume. DiskCount can be one of the following:

    • “min”, which indicates that the smallest number of disks that can
      be used for the requested RaidLevel whould be used.
    • “max”, which indicates that the largest number of disks with the
      same Type and Protocol should be used.
    • A positive integer.

    If DiskCount is unspecified and Disks is also unspecified, DiskCount will default to “min”.

  • Size: A string value that indicates what the desired total useable size of the RAID array should be. When you let drp-raid decide what physical disks to pick for volume creation, it will pick the smallest disks that can be used to satisfy the volume creation request. Size can be one of the following values:

    • “min”, which will pick the smallest disks that meet the rest of
      the constraints in the volspec.
    • “max”, which will pick the largest disks that meet the rest of the
      constraints in the volspec.
    • A string containing a human-readable size (100 MB, 1 TB, 5 PB).

    If Size is unspecified or left blank, it will default to “max”.

  • Type: A comma-seperated list of disk types that should be tried in order when creating a volume. Currently, individual items can be “disk” for rotational disks, and “ssd” for solid-state disks. If unspecified, “disk,ssd” will be used. All physical disks in a created volume will be of the same type, and it is perrmitted to have a list with one entry.

  • Protocol: A comma-seperated list of low-level protocols that should be tried in order when creating a volume. Currently, individual items can be “sata” for disks that communicate using the SATA protocol, and “sas” for disks that communicate using the SAS protocol. All physical disks in a created volume will communicate using the same protocol, and it is perrmitted to have a list with one entry.

  • StripeSize: A string containing the human-readable size of each individual stripe in the RAID array. It is generally a power of two less than or equal to 1 MB. If unspecified, it defaults to “64 KB”.

  • Name: The desired name of the volume, if the RAID controller supports naming volumes. Naming a volume is currently unsupported.

  • VolumeID: The controller-specific ID of the created volume.

  • Bootable: A boolean value indicating whether this volume should be the default one the RAID controller will use when booting the system. Defaults to false, and Bootable support is currently not implemented.

  • Encrypt: Whether the volume should be transparently encrypted by the RAID controller. This requires controller-specific setup.

  • AllowMixedSizes: Whether we will create a volume that spans physical disks of wildly mixed sizes. By default, we will fail if we pick disks underlying a volume that vary in size by more than 10%.

23.37.4.3.3. raid-available-utilities

These are the tools installed on the system that are available for configuration operations.

The raid-install-tools task will attempt to install all tools it can find. This list reflects the available tools.

23.37.4.3.4. raid-encryption-password

The password to use for Raid Controller encryption feature. If unset, a random value will be created and forgotten.

23.37.4.3.5. raid-clear-config

When configuring the RAID subsystem, this parameter defines if the configuration should be cleared before applying volume specifications.

Setting the value to true will cause the configuration to be cleared.

The default is false.

23.37.4.3.6. raid-current-config

This is generally untyped dump of the configuration of the RAID subsystem.

Each controller type provides different slightly different information based upon its capabilities.

23.37.4.3.7. raid-encryption-key

The master key or key id to use for Raid Controller encryption feature. If unset, a random value will be created and forgotten.

23.37.4.3.8. raid-skip-config

This flag indicates if the configuration of the RAID subsystem should be skipped. This flag is used to make sure that once a configuration run is complete, a future run will not wipe out the configuration.

When true, the system will not configure the RAID system. The raid-configure task will be skipped.

The raid-reset task will clear this to enable reconfiguration.

23.37.4.3.9. raid-skip-encryption

The raid-skip-encryption flag, when true, will cause the configuration encryption taks to be skipped.

This allows the system to know when encryption has been configured and should be skipped to keep disks in a functioning state.

The raid-reset stage will clear this flag to allow for reconfiguration.

23.37.4.3.10. raid-usable-utilities

These are the tools that could be used and the order to use them in configuration operations.

The raid-install-tools task will attempt to install all tools it can find. This list reflects the subset of those tools to use.

23.37.4.3.11. raid-archive-urls

This map of tool name to URL allows for the operator to override the location of the tool install archives. This should be used to override DRP serving these files.

When running the raid-baseline task, the system will use this variable to determine if the generate volume specification should be generic or have specific disk references.

The default is generic. The turn off set the value to false.
